Taiz – As part of the “Return of Looted Homes” initiative carried out by SAM Organization for Rights and Liberties in partnership with the Abductees’ Mothers Association, and under the SPARK Project to support peace in Yemen funded by the DT Institute, a number of homes were handed back to their rightful owners on 28 September and 2 October 2025 in Al-Haraziya, Salah District, Taiz Governorate, after many years of displacement and deprivation.

Citizen Yahya Al-Matari was finally able to reclaim his home after being forcibly displaced in 2014, returning for the first time on the day of the handover after years away in the capital, Sana’a. The following individuals also regained possession of their homes:

• Manour Mahmoud Ahmed Abdu

• Mohammed Mahmoud Ahmed Abdu

• Hamid Ahmed Mohammed Ismail

These families had been unable to access their properties since 2015 due to the ongoing conflict.

The Reconciliation and Mediation Committee oversaw the handover, which both organizations described as an important step toward restoring property rights and rebuilding the social fabric — a move that helps strengthen civil peace and advance transitional justice in Taiz and across Yemen.

SAM emphasized that the handover of looted homes will continue in the coming period, allowing more displaced families to return and fostering an environment of reconciliation and coexistence after years of war and human rights violations.
