Geneva - Sam Organization for Rights and Liberties stated that the Prosecutor-General's decision to commission a committee of judges to visit prisons in Aden to verify the legality and legitimacy of detention is a positive step deserving praise, expressing hope that it will contribute to the release of arbitrary detainees and uncovering the fate of forcibly disappeared individuals.
On Monday, July 15, the Prosecutor-General issued a decision commissioning a committee of judges to visit all detention centers in Aden to verify the legality of those held in those places and ensure that those in charge are complying with laws governing detention and imprisonment.
Sam emphasized that this step should be followed by tangible and decisive actions, including the need to activate the role of judicial institutions, resolving outstanding cases, especially those with political undertones, as well as monitoring law enforcement agencies and other responsible entities, and requiring them to respect human rights and adhere to legal procedures to ensure justice and fairness for detained victims.
Sam referred to previous reports testifying to witnesses' statements and evidence confirming that security agencies and armed formations have flagrantly violated the basic rights of detainees, subjected them to forms of torture in unofficial detention centers not subject to judicial oversight. Sam stressed the necessity of releasing all political or ideological detainees, including journalists and human rights activists, and holding accountable those individuals and entities found to be involved in forced disappearance, arbitrary detention, and torture of victims.
