Geneva — SAM Organization for Rights and Liberties stated that the assault on journalist Weam Al-Sofi in the city of Taiz constitutes a grave violation of human rights and reflects a persistent state of impunity. The organization called for urgent intervention to halt these violations and to ensure the victim’s right to protection and fair legal redress.
SAM explained that security forces affiliated with the Cairo District Police Department surrounded Al-Sofi’s home and threatened to storm it, accompanied by female police officers, in a blatant violation of the sanctity of homes and the dignity of citizens. The organization added that this incident is a continuation of previous violations targeting the victim’s home and personal belongings, with no measures taken to hold those responsible accountable.
The organization affirmed that repeated attacks on female journalists and activists in Taiz pose a serious threat to press freedom and public confidence in justice institutions. SAM stressed the urgent need for a transparent investigation, accountability for those involved, and the provision of full protection for journalist Weam Al-Sofi and her family, ensuring her right to justice and redress.
