SAM for Rights and Liberties, in partnership with the Abductees' Mothers Association, organized a workshop for journalists in Taiz as part of the “Support for Peace in Yemen for Reconciliation and Knowledge Exchange (SPARK)” project, funded by the DT Institute. The workshop aimed to strengthen the role of the media in safeguarding the transitional justice process and preventing the recurrence of violations.

The workshop addressed several key themes, including the concept of transitional justice and its relationship to the media, transitional justice within the Yemeni context, and the impact of hate speech on prospects for reconciliation. It also examined the integrity of justice procedures and the importance of shielding them from politicization.

Discussions further covered the ethics of media reporting on victims’ issues, the media’s role in advocating for victims, and its contribution to peacebuilding and strengthening societal trust.

Project Coordinator Muath Al-Faqih stated that the workshop sought to raise journalists’ awareness of the importance of reinforcing their role in protecting the integrity of transitional justice processes and preventing their politicization or selective application. He emphasized the need for professional dialogue on ethical media coverage, the media’s role in supporting victims, and its contribution to reconciliation and comprehensive peacebuilding in Yemen.
